Big Town Auto totaled $437,184 in revenue in August. August's revenue was 8% greater than July's revenue. July's revenue was 12% below the revenue for June. What was the revenue for June?

I couldn't seem to find a simple way to divide 437,184 by 8% to get July's revenue. So I started with that amount and worked to it until when I multiplied the July's revenue by 8% and added it back, it came to 437, 184. So here is what I got: July's revenue of $404,800. 404, 800 + 8% = 437,184.

Since June is 12% above July's revenue, I tried dividing 404,800 by 12% and of course it did not come out right. So I started working on the numbers logically. I got: 404,800 + 12% = 460,000. In figuring these numbers, I worked backwards part of the way. I saw that 460,000 minus 12% equals 404,800.

So I say the answer is $460,000 for the revenue of June.

Here's one way of doing this exercise:

i) Pick a variable for June's revenue.

ii) Write an expression, in terms of (i), for July's revenue. (Note: If July is twelve percent below June, then July is 88% of June.)

iii) Write an expression, in terms of (ii), for August's revenue. (Note: If August is eight percent more than July, then August is 108% of July.)

iv) Set the expression in (iii) equal to the given revenue for August.

v) Solve for the variable from (i).

You should get the same answer as you have already found! :D
