Do you know how to add:

\(\displaystyle \frac{1}{2}\, + \, \frac{1}{4} \, = \, ?\)

\(\displaystyle \frac{w}{2}+\frac{w}{4}=12\)

I guess you are trying to solve for w.

First step might be to multiply both sides of the equation by the least common denominator of the fractions. Then solve the resulting equation.
