The length of one side of a rectangle, which is 20 inches, equals half the width increased by 8. What is the width?

L=20in=1/2W+8
A=LW
A=20 (1/2 W +8)
10W + 160

I am just confused.

Indeed, you are confused. Why do you need the Area?

20in=(1/2)W+8 in

Solve for W and you're done.
