Phil worked twice as many hours as Jerry. Marcia worked 3 more hours than Jerry. If they worked a total of 31 hours, find out how many hours each worked.

Define the Unknown?

What is the equation?

If P, J and M represent the number of hours worked by each:

Phil worked twice as many hours as Jerry or P = 2J

Marcia worked 3 more hours than Jerry or M = J + 3

SInce they worked a total of 31 hours, P + J + M = 31.

Can you take it from here?

The "unknown" seems to be how many hours each of the three worked.
