I have this question on homework.
I think I have to put x and y into some mathematical model?
Is anyone have some idea how I do this?

Suppose that we observe the following data:

x y
1 2
2 5
3 5
4 8
5 9

a) Calculate the correlation between x and y.
b) Do a linear regression where x explains y and calculate the slope and the intercept.
c) Are the correlation coefficient and the slope related? If yes, how?
d) What would be your best prediction of y for x = 6?

Thanks for any kind of help! =)

The correlation coefficient is r. And it is found by using a scary looking equation, but it's really not that hard to use if you know how. Excel or a graphing calculator will answer all of these questions for you, assuming you're allowed to use them. But, this could be done by hand since the data set is so small.

Check out this site for more info. Let me know if you have any other questions or want to know how to do this in excel.

My computer doesnt do excel, thats the problem =(
I´ve tried to install but it doesnt work, really frustated about that!
However, I have a texas calculator... Maybe this one can help me?
Thanks for the answer! :D

I almost understand how im suposed to do on the calculator... but when i finally get an r on the screen... then?

What kind of calculator are you using? Here's a ti83/84 demonstration on how to do a scatter plot which is what you need to do in order to do regression analysis. This will find the line and thus the slope, and will help answer all your other questions
