Comparison Distributions

Hi,

I need to know how to determine the characteristics of the comparison distribution - the second step of hypothesis testing? Once I know this, I believe that I can figure the rest out by myself. I know how to calculate Z-scores, and figure raw scores. I also know how to calculate probability - I just do not understand what it means to determine the characteristics of comparison distributions. Can someone please assist me.
