Please use your grouping symbols.

Here is what you have written:

\(\displaystyle x^{2}-9x+\frac{20}{x^{2}}-x-12\)

I am pretty sure you mean:

\(\displaystyle \frac{x^{2}-9x+20}{x^{2}-x-12}\)

If so, factor the top and bottom, then make any relevant cancellations.

so like this (x - 5) (x -4) / (x -4) (x +3)

x - 4 cancels out leaving x/3 / x +3 ?

Yep. But, when the x-4 cancels, you are left with:

\(\displaystyle \frac{x-5}{x+3}\)

What is that x/3?.

Not quite: (x - 5) (x -4) / [(x -4) (x +3)] ; TRY and remember that!
