There is 32 oz jar that is filled halfway. If the jar is filled 5/8 more, how many oz is that?

should i divide 5/8ths first to get 0.625?

Hi Psychguy98,

The question is a bit misleading, I think. If the jar is half filled, then there are 16 oz filled and 16 oz of space left.

To fill 5/8 more, that would be 5/8 of 16 or 10 more ounces.

Now the jar has a total of 26 ounces filled. That's my interpretation. And there's no need to convert 5/8 to .625.

Hello, Psychguy98!

I hope that's not the original wording of the problem . . .

There is 32-ounce jar that is filled halfway.
If the jar is filled 5/8 more, . five-eighths of WHAT?
how many ounces is that?

They could be referring to:

. . \(\displaystyle \begin{array}{ccccc}\frac{5}{8}\text{ of a gallon} & \text{just kidding} \\ \\[-3mm] \frac{5}{8}\text{ of an ounce} & \text{doubtful} \\ \\[-3mm] \frac{5}{8}\text{ of the 16 oz.} & \text{I don't think so} \\ \\[-3mm] \frac{5}{8}\text{ of the jar} & \text{most likely} \end{array}\)

\(\displaystyle \text{But }\tfrac{1}{2} + \tfrac{5}{8} \:=\:\tfrac{9}{8}\)

The stuff won't fit in the jar.
