Here is the word problem:

The cost of renting a subcompact car from the Super Rental is $20 a day plus 25 cents per mile. How far can Allison drive in on dday if she only has $75?

I know to write the equation, X = the total number of miles. I believe the answer is 13.75 miles. I just don't know how to write it into an equation.

Ok...X = total number of miles

It costs 25 cents, or $ 0.25, for each mile she drives. So, the cost in DOLLARS for driving X miles will be 0.25*X

The total cost for renting the car is $20 plus the cost for the miles she drives

total cost = 20 + 0.25X

If she only has $75 to spend,

75 = 20 + 0.25X

Can you solve that for X now?
