Coin and change word problem

Johnny has $6.75 in dimes and quarters. He has 8 more dimes than quarters. HOw many quarters does Johnny have? HOw many dimes does he have?

i know how to do a set up of an original type of problem but the 8 more dimes is throwing me off....I cant seem to figure out how to set it up....I would appreciate the help thanks

Hi Johnny,

Let's solve this using only one equation.

Let q = the number of quarters Johnny has.

Let q + 8 = the number of dimes Johnny has (he has 8 more dimes than quarters.

Let 25q = the value in cents for all the quarters Johnny has.

Let 10(q + 8) = the value in cents for all the dimes Johnny has.

Let 675 = the total value in cents of all the dimes and quarters put together.

Can you build the equation with the above information? I bet you can!
