Hi,

Here's a ratio problem I cannot seem to get the correct answer for....

A wheel rotates 13750 times. How many rotations does a second wheel do if the rotations are at the ratio of 12:20?

I simply did, 12/20 = 13750/x

therefore 12x = 275000

x = 22916.67

The correct answer was shown as 23000 (?)

Ratio? Looks like Dimensional Analysis to me.

W1 = Wheel 1 Rotations
W2 = Wheel 2 Rotations

\(\displaystyle 13750\;W1\cdot \frac{20\;W2}{12\;W1} = 22916.66666\;W1\)

You have it, but now you must worry about significant figures. We started with 4 and multiplied by 2 and divided by 2. Should we lose one? There may be other clues for exactly how to round.
