5 students selected from a class of 42. How many selections possible if 5 are selected if first gets an A, second a B, third C, fourth D, fifth F. You can only receive one grade. My previous post was similar to this, so maybe I am over thinking again. Would this be 42 x 41 x 40 x 39 x 38 maybe? Your help is greatly appreciated!

Hello, SadAtMath!

5 students selected from a class of 42.
How many selections possible if 5 are selected if first gets an A, second a B, third C, fourth D, fifth F.
You can only receive one grade.

My previous post was similar to this, so maybe I am over thinking again.
Would this be 42 x 41 x 40 x 39 x 38 ?

You are correct!

Think it through . . .

There are 42 choices for the student who gets the A.
There are 41 choices for the student who gets the B.
There are 40 choices for the student who gets the C.
. . and so on . . .
