Don't know where to post it but here seems okay.

I am totally stumped, and I cant contact my teacher till Monday.

The country of Aveyville with a population of 4,500,000 this year will import $14million in candy canes. How much is that per capita?

Would I just do 4.5million/14million:?:

No.

"Per capita" means what is the average for each person. There is $14 million spent among 4.5 million people. When you divide
4.5 million by 14 million, you get an average of about 32 cents, 0.32 dollars. If each person out of 4.5 million spent on average 032 dollars, the total spent would be 4.5 million * 0.32 dollars, about 1.44 million. Something is wrong.

What you need to do is to divide the money spent by the number of people. 14 million divided by 4.5 million is about 3.11 dollars for each person.
Let's check. If each person spent on average about $3.11 and there are 4.5 million people, then the total spent must be about 14 million dollars.

So the correct answer is 14 million/ 4.5 million. Do you understand why?
