What is a good program - either purchased or freeware - for a layman?

I'm ok with basic algebra, but not calculus. Do I need a calculus course before tackling probability?

For general probability you don't need software. A high end calculator will serve you well.
That are sites such WolframAlpha that can really help you with calculations.
Here is another website that is useful.

As for background knowledge, a good grounding is basic set theory and operations is a must.
You need to understand basic counting principles. That is for basic probability.
If you want to be able to work with continuous distributions you want to know caculus.
