What is a good program - either purchased or freewucare - for a layman?
I'm ok with basic algebra, but not calculus. Do I need a calculus course before tackling probability?
For general probability you don't need software. A high end calculator will serve you well.

You need to understand basic counting principles. That is for basic probability.
If you want to be able to work with continuous distributions you want to know caculus.
