Working on a triangle problem

if 2x2 = 36

why can't you take the sqrt of both sides like this?

sqrt(2x2) = sqrt(36)

sqrt(2) * x = 6

x = 6 / sqrt(2)

this doesn't give the correct answer of 4, but I don't get why. (And yes I know that it's simpler to divide each side by 2 first)

Thanks for any help!

2 * 42 = 2 * 16 = 32 which is not equal to 36.
