The problem:

For a given two-digit positive integer, the tens digit is 5 more than the units digit. The sum of the digits is 11. Find the integer.

I'm really not sure of a good strategy when it comes to problems like this. If anyone has suggestions, it would be really useful for as I prepare to take the GRE in a week. Any help would be appreciated.

Let the:

Unit digit number = U

Ten digit number = T

the tens digit is 5 more than the units digit → T = U + 5 ............................. (1)

the sum of the digits is 11 → U + T = 11..................... ............................. (2)

Now you have two equations and two unknowns - solve the system using your favorite method.............
