    Translation/Reflection/Expansion/Compression of a graph

    The instructions state: Describe the graph of y = sqrt( 7 - x^2 - 6x ) relative to the graph of y = sqrt( x ). HINT: sqrt( 7 - x^2 -6x ) = sqrt( 7 - ( x^2 + 6x )); complete the square This is my work thus far: 7 - ( X^2 + 6x ) = 0 - ( x^2 + 6x ) = -7 above mult by -1 (on both sides) x^2 +...

    Quadratic Formula

Ok, that definitely confirms I was going about the problem the wrong way. I'm just supposed to be solving for 'y' . I think I keep trying to do this stuff when I'm too tired!

    Quadratic Formula

Can I use the quadratic formula to factor an equation with two variables such as: 2x - 3xy + 4y = -4 Thanks!

    Domain of a function

    Ok, given the last explanation, this is what I did: f(x) = x^2 - | x - 2 |, find the zeros of the function. for x < 2 |x-2| = (-1)(x-2) = -x + 2 = x^2 - (-x +2) = x^2 + x - 2 a = 1, b = 1, c = -2 (prep for quadratic formula) [-(1) + sqrt( 1^2 - 4(1)(-2))] / 2(1) = [ -1 + sqrt( 9 )] / 2...

    Domain of a function

:) Thanks for that. My reply was the new problem. I don't think I was very clear in my explanation though so I'll type it out again real quick. Let f(x) = x^2 - |x-2| Solve f(x) =0 My best guess at this point is that my professor is asking for: x^2 - |x - 2| = 0 ------- and to solve...

    Domain of a function

    :( I understand what you're saying. On any other problem I think I would be fine. What is throwing me is the x^2. I tried: x^2 - (x-2) > 0 and x^2 - (x-2) < 0, but for some reason I can't get past this part... am I even rewriting the function for x < 0 and x > 0? I really don't...

Eh, disregard that last post  I just realized my error!! Thanks!

    Domain of a function

Awesome, thank you :) If I were to solve f(x) = 0, I would set the function equal to zero or would I substitute 0 for the x's in the equation as in f(0)? (for the same function above) Originally to solve f(x) = 0, this is the work I did: f(0) = 0^2 - |0-2| = -|0-2| = -|-2| = -2 Now thinking...

    Domain of a function

Somehow this problem is probably a lot easier than I am making it out to be but I'm so stuck. I'm not sure where to begin. Let f(x) = x^2 - |x-2|, find the domain. My work: x^2 - |x-2| = 0 x^2 = |x-2| sqrt(x^2) = sqrt(|x-2|) I'm not sure why I went to square roots, I think I'm just...
