Basic Division: 9÷5 is equals to 1.8 on calculator, but I get 1R4 = 1.4 by hand

Hi guys I'm 14 and I'm trying to understand this...
9÷5 is equals to 1.8 on calculator, but when I make the division myself it becomes 1.4 or 1r4. Please help I don't get this

1r4 is correct - 1 and remainder 4. Not sure where 1.4 comes from. Could you explain how you got this result?

I thought that 1r4 could be written as 1.4, my bad :?::?
but how can it also be 1.8? Why does my calculator say 1.8?

i think i understand... so the remainder of 4 needs to be divided by 5 also which turns into 0.8

Yeah. Having a remainder of 4 means "I tried to divide 9 by 5. I discovered that 5 goes into 9 at least once (5*1 = 5), with a remainder of 4."

Now, to finish the job, you have to also divide the remainder by 5, hence it becomes 4/5.

In fraction form:

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{9}{5} = \dfrac{(5+4)}{5} = \dfrac{5}{5} + \dfrac{4}{5} = 1 + \dfrac{4}{5} \)

Makes sense?
