How to reduce original 70" X 32" (L X H) rectangle, given new L is 50" ?

The original rectangle is 70" X 32" (L X H)

If the length were reduced to 50", what would the height be?

Thank you Math Savants.

Use ratio!

Are you supposed to keep the aspect ratio (so that the height is to be reduced in such a manner as to keep the picture the same, without stretching or squishing)? If so, use ratios, as the first reply suggested. Use them to set up a proportion, using the info the second reply provided:

70 : 32
50 : ?
I Dont...
"You don't"... what? You don't know what ratios are? You don't know how to solve proportions? The picture isn't supposed to retain its aspect ratio, so the earlier hints don't apply? Or something else?

Please be specific. When you reply, please include a clear listing of your thoughts and efforts so far. Thank you! ;)

Thank you for the direction to your ratios page.

Is this the answer? 22.85

70:32
50:X

70x = 1600

70 = 1600/x

1600 \ 70X = 22.85

Yes -- but your decimal approximation is not properly rounded.

The exact answer is 160/7 (that's 22 6/7 inches).

70x = 1600

70 = 1600/x

1600 \ 70X = 22.85
70x = 1600 is good.

Next, one step will solve for x: divide each side by 70

x = 1600/70

PS: Don't switch between symbols x and X. Use one or use the other, not both. :cool:
