I get the concept of Summation Notation but the fractions really screw me over, can someone give me a general step by step on how it can apply to any problem? I have this one as an example

1/2 + 1/4 + 1/8 +..... 1/256

You can write that as:
S = \(\displaystyle \displaystyle{\sum_{n=1}^8 2^{-n}}\)
