Hello

A flatscreen TV is for sale at 799
Today you pay only 3/4 of the normal price.

3/4 is the same as 75%
I've worked out that 10% = 799/10=79.90
79.90 x 75% = 5992.5

So is the new price going to be 599.25 or 199.75? (799.00-599.25)

Thanks

Please post the "exact" problem as it was presented to you.

In math word problems, the word "of" usually means multiplication. You're told that you pay 3/4 of the original price, $799. You then multiplied 3/4 by $799. What does this suggest about your answer? Your other answer when you subtracted $599.25 from $799 gives you a smaller answer. Here you can note that division is the inverse operation of multiplication. Dividing by a number is the same as multiplying by one over that number. What do you divide $799 by to get $199.75? What then would you have to multiply $799 by to get that same answer? What is that when you express it in a percentage? What does that tell you about whether it's the correct answer or not?

The new price is given to us. It's $799.

You have not posted the actual question in this exercise, so I have guessed that it asks for the normal price.

In other words, 75% of what dollar amount equals $799?

Please show us which method your class was taught for working with percents/percentages.

Are you using the Proportion Method?

Part/Whole = Percent/100

Note: The above has no actual "question" in it (such as "What is the usual selling price?"), so there is nothing here actually to "answer". Please provide the mising information.

3/4 is the same as 75%
I've worked out that 10% = 799/10=79.90
79.90 x 75% = 5992.5
You appear to have multiplied one-tenth of the on-sale amount by 75. This gives you 750% of the on-sale price. How do you feel this relates to the given exercise?

So is the new price going to be 599.25...
You appear here to have found one-tenth of 750% of the on-sale price, or 75% of the on-sale price. (Note: This is also, necessarily, much less than whatever was the list price.) How do you feel this relates to the given exercise?

...or 199.75? (799.00-599.25)
How do you feel that (75% of list) - (75% of list)(75% of list) = (18.75% of list) relates to the original exercise?

Please be specific. Thank you! ;)

Since 75%=3/4 is less than 100%, when you take 75% of a number, that is when you take PART of a number you get a smaller number. So how can 79.90 x 75% be 5992.5 which is more than 79.90????? OK, you worked out what 10% of 799 is and you did that correctly. But why did you find 10% of 799? Did you tell us the whole problem??

[So is the new price going to be 599.25 or 199.75? (799.00-599.25)] 75% is more than 50% which is half. Does that help you??
