The referenced page indicates three different versions of the rules. Are you asking about one of them, in particular?

My first thought is that "the math behind this game" is topology. :cool:

There is not. As far as I can see there are 88 possible distinct configurations (not counting rotations). How they go from 88 to 64 seems to be absolutely open.
