Hello. Imagine a square. Now rotate 45 degrees to get a 'diamond'. Each corner of the shape is hinged. If the shape is suspended from the top corner and a force applied downwards from the bottom corner (a weight for instance) the shape will elongate downwards and narrow widthwise. Between the 2 side corners there will be a compression force. I have been trying but failing to work out the relationship of the up/down tension and sideways compression. Beginning with a 'flat' diamond all the way through to a very pointy one. Also, how does the length of the sides effect the relationship between the forces?
I have tried to look this up and see scissor lifts, car jacks etc but have not managed to make any numerical sense of it. Any ideas? Thanks
