Hi

I am struggling to work our how the above question equals answer D?

Can someone work our and explain as simple as possible please?

Much Appreciated

What makes a rational expression fail to exist? Have you considered factoring the denominator?

I have no clue how the question equals answer D on my card.

Hint: Factorize the denominator

Do you have a textbook or other materials, with worked examples and explanations for how to factor a quadratic polynomial?

If not, let us know if you need help finding lessons on-line.

Basically, when the leading coefficient A is 1, we have this form:

x^2 + Bx + C

If it factors nicely, you can find two numbers whose sum is B and whose product is C.

To elaborate a little on the other answers: Something you should know is that, put simply, if the denominator of a function is zero the function is undefined [of course you can define in but you can't just plug in the zero value to get the answer]. So, what this question can be changed to is "When is
g(x) = x2 - 17x + 72
equal to zero?" You can go through the given choices or, as another thing you should have in your 'knowledge of the trade', you can factor the equation or possible use the quadratic formula to find out where g(x) is zero.
