Hi,

Here's a ratio problem I cannot seem to get the correct answer for....

A wheel rotates 13750 times. How many rotations does a second wheel do if the rotations are at the ratio of 12:20?

I simply did, 12/20 = 13750/x

therefore 12x = 275000

x = 22916.67

The correct answer was shown as 23000 (?)

Are you an engineering student? All I can think of is [assuming they really meant the problem as given], sometimes accuracy of measurements are expected to used. Thus if input data is given which is know only to a certain accuracy, the answer is only known to a certain accuracy. The 12:20 indicates 2 significant figures [i.e., the 12 is really 12 plus or minus 0.5], so you can only have two significant figures in your answer. Thus the answer is rounded to that number, i.e. [23 plus or minus 0.5]*103
