In the final exams, Richard got an average of 83 marks in Japanese, English and Mathematics and an average of 84 marks in mathematics, Asain studies, and Science. If his average for five subjects, excluding Mathematics is 82, how many marks did he get in Mathematics?

Formula/working, please.

How is an Average Calculated?

I'm sorry, but we don't do that. Instead, we help students learn how to do "the working" themselves.

If he averaged 83 points in each of the first three classes, then what were his total points for those classes? (Hint: Multiply.)

If he averaged 84 points in each of the second three classes, then what were his total points for those classes? (Hint: Multiply.)

What then was his overall point total? (Hint: Add.)

If he averaged 82 points in each of the five non-math classes, then what were his total points for those classes? (Hint: Multiply.)

Then what did he get in mathematics? (Hint: Subtract.)

If you get stuck, please reply showing your thoughts and efforts so far. Thank you! ;)

In the final exams, Richard got an average of 83 marks in … Mathematics and an average of 84 marks in mathematics …
That seems like a contradiction.

(Maybe we are supposed to assume that Mathematics is a different course than mathematics.)
