Charlie is the oldest child in the Brown family. He is seven years less than three times as old as his sister Sally. Sally is three years older than their brother ReRun. If the sum of the ages of all three children is 15, find the age of each child.

need help please and show work, thanks!!

First of all we need to assume there are only three children in the family. Let us also assume:

Charlie Brown's age = C

Sally's age = S

Rerun's age = R

the sum of all the children's ages is 15 → C + S + R = 15

It is very, very difficult for you to show your work if you just copy it from someone else.
You MUST have SOME idea or it is horribly unfair for you to have been given this problem.

You are in algebra, so it is fair to assume you are getting used to using names of things to represent what you need.

One good rule of thumb is simply to NAME everything you need that you don't know. Let the notation help you. I'll get you started...

C = Charlie's Age
S = Sally's Age
R = ReRun's Age

That may have been the hardest part of the problem. Your challenge, now, is to take each sentence and see what it is trying to tell you. Just take one sentence at a time. Go!

If you are very new to algebra, and have not learned how to work with more than one variable, then you might try defining x and Rerun's age. Then write an expression for Sally's age, and one for Charlie's age. Then you can write an equation.

But it is more natural to solve this problem with three variables, as others have suggested.

The important thing is that you show us some sort of work, so we can see where you need help.
