A group of coworkers decided to buy their boss and $400 birthday gift, and to split the cost equally among themselves. When three of the coworkers decided not to contribute, those remaining still divided the $400 birthday gift equally, but each coworker's share of the cost increased by $30. How many coworkers were in the group originally?

Can anyone please help me to understand how to make equation of this kind of question.

Pick a symbol to represent the quantity asked for in the exercise.

Use that symbol to write an expression for the share-per-person with all coworkers participating.

Then, write an expression for the share-per-person without 3 coworkers.

The difference between the higher share-per-person (when 3 coworkers don't participate) and the lower share-per-person (when all coworkers participate) is $30.

[expression (without 3 coworkers)] - [expression (with all coworkers)] = 30
