Hi all,

In an examination, each student in a group scores either 8, 12, 16 or 20 marks. The number of students scoring each mark is shown in the table below. If the median mark is 12, then the largest the possible value of x will be:

Mark 8 12 16 20
Number of students 10 20 x 10

A) 49
B) 59
C) 69
D) None of these

Just guide how to solve it and then I will solve it by myself. Any help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks and Regards
Sumaira

Do you know what a median is? The solution starts with the definition.

One good starting definition is that the median is a number such that no more than half of the data values are less, and no more than half are greater. There are other ways to say it, particularly when there are an even number of values. Whatever your definition, what does it tell you here?

Can you verify that you quoted the problem correctly? I suspect that one of the numbers may be wrong, because the answer seems too obvious.
