As odd as it sounds, I was calculating the average of vehicle stats in a video game to determine versatility. When I went to calculate 35+64+30 all at once on my calculator app, I got an average of 109. When I calculated the same numbers 35+64+30, but did 129÷3, I got an average of 43.

Would anyone care to explain this phenomenon?

Thank you.

The phenomenon is Order of Operations.

Does your calculator app have grouping-symbol keys? If not, you'll need to try entering twice.

Try: 35 + 64 + 30 = ÷ 3 =

If there are grouping symbols try: ( 35 + 64 + 30 ) ÷ 3 =

You get 109 because the app is using the rule: Do division before addition, so it evaluates like this:

35 + 64 + 30 ÷ 3

35 + 64 + 10

109
