Not to brag, but I actually got the answer immediately, and was waiting to give others time to get it. For some reason, harridan was the first thing I thought of, and then I saw the anagram and only then saw that "scared" could indicate that.

This is not typical of me.

Okay, I get it now -- an entirely different direction than I had in mind when I tried to solve if before -- and not the first cartoon character I'd think of.

Popeye, a cartoon character = PALOOKA
