Dull crypt

Ha, I see a crypt where the entire clue serves both as direct and as word play -- if Big Ben were known to be some boring dude. Like a weird &lit clue, an &lit&wp (word play) clue! Anyway, silly, but the crypt does produce BLAH BLAH both ways, by direct (entire clue) and word play (entire clue).

Still chewing on it …

So you don't lose too much time:
it's a simple homophone clue; direct on right...

Sure, I got that much. I'm trying to think of the homophones. (Hope I don't need to be British, to get the answer.)

Think yer on right path.
1st answer word = homophone of a synonym of dull; similarly for 2nd.

Yep: thick "kinda sounds like" tick.
"Homophone" clues are pretty "loose in the caboose!".
I've seen oust = house!!

You no agree??

God save the queen

It'll make for more homophone clues, using grouse growls and such. ;)
