Refresh your memory about the meaning of variance in populations and samples and how each is calculated, and then experiment. For example, at the link, you could sample the population of five dogs by picking three at random. Calculate the variance in shoulder height. Next, pick a different trio, and calculate the variance for that sample. Try picking one sample with two dogs and one sample with four dogs. Compare those variances with the others.
