Draw a 5×5 grid. There are five rows (numbered 1 through 5, from top to bottom). There are five columns (numbered 1 through 5, from left to right).

Fill in the grid, using ten 5-letter answers from the following dual crypts. Each clue number corresponds to a row and column number.

1) Mountain remains after second hard-it ball (5)

2) Bygone author with a kind of food (5)

3) Holiday season lacks initial direction for plant (5)

4) Grab and mix plaster, naked (5)

5) Old-time comic Lear ending in carried-away finale (5)

I'll do #5; Harry can wrap it up!

HARDY (old comic)
EARLY : EARL = comic LEAR (anagram); Y = awaY finale

I'll do #5 … HARDY …
That's half of #5.

PS: There's no advtantage to inserting blank lines in front of a spoiled answer. I think you ought to continue posting answers; that is, don't change. (You've already satisfied my curiosity.)

Ya...the other half is EARLY (5 down)

Be this the way "it looks like?":

0 1 2 3 4 5
1 ? ? A K E
2 ? ? S N A
3 I N T E R
4 S T E A L
5 H A R D Y

My point was: this 5by5 is "tougher" (thus more fun)
since the "across or down" is not given...

I showed this after solving 3:
0 1 2 3 4 5
1 ? ? A K E
2 ? ? S N A
3 I N T E R
4 S T E A L
5 H A R D Y

Had I continued, I would have needed to "adjust" it,
else would end up pulling my air out!!
