I am currently trying to work out pass percentages for my course work at university

The course work consists of 2 different pieces of work that are marked separately
the first course work piece is worth 20% and the second is worth 80%.

In the first coursework I got 17% out of the possible 20%

The second course work is marked in two parts
The first part is out of 22- of which I got 12
The second part is out of 30 - which I haven’t received a mark for yet

What mark do I need to get in the second part of the second course work to get an overall
mark of 50% for both course works combined?

Any help would be appreciated

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{Total\;Earned\;(Add\;up\;everything)}{Total\;Possible\;(Add\;up\;everything)}\)

.5=.2(17/20)+.8(.5)(12/22+x/80)
solve for x

the .5 is because you have to average the 2 parts of the second course

Where did the 80 come from? Why average the 2 parts. You might be right, but this was not given.
I feel it should be .5 = .2(17/20)+.8((22+x)/52) where x is the number of points you got on part 2 of the 2nd exam. I got 52 from there being 22+30 points on the 2nd part. I got 22+x from getting 22 points and then x points.

You ask what grade you need on the 2nd part of exam 2 to get 50% overall. Depending on what form you want your answer in, it will be either x/30 or (100x/30)%.

I suspect that you will not mind if you get over 50%. So to do this you should solve for .2(17/20)+.8((22+x)/52) \(\displaystyle \ge\).5
