I suspect that the algebra they have in mind is similar to the way we derive the formula for the sum of a geometric series, adding different multiples of the given sum, and plugging in a specific value for x. The calculus presumably involves differentiating the given sum, and then doing similar algebra.

Do those sound like good ideas to you? Give it a try. Then show us your attempt, so we can see if you are going in the wrong direction.
