proving trigonometric identities

what is the rule to follow while proving trigonometric identities? i think it has to do with a log or something.
 
No rule. Usually it is best to change every thing to sine or cosine then look for a way to change it into one of the identitys you know. Sine squared plus cosine squared equals one gets a lot of play. If you have a specific example it would help.
 
I can think of a couple:

1) Try it.
2) Proceed boldly.
3) Remember that you can't break it. It's just a bunch of symbols.
4) Don't be afraid to to whatever pops to mind, even if it looks like it won't get you anywhere.
5) When in doubt, change to sine and cosine and see what falls out.
