d = number of dimes; so number of nickels = 20 - d

value of dimes = .10d
value of nickels = .05(20 - d)

.10d + .05(20 - d) = 1.40

OK?

thanks for the help, but when i solve it i get .9d = 8.60, and that doesnt come out right .... lost in cali
:(
thanks

Try multiplying by 100 to get
10d + 5(20 - d) = 140
That looks easier. If you still can't get it, show your work.
