The area of square WXYZ is 25 cm^2. The four smaller squares have sides 1 cm long. In triangle ABC, AB=AC. When triangle ABC is folded over line BC, point A coincides with O, the center of square WXYZ. What is the area of triangle ABC.

I got \(\displaystyle 3.5^2\)

is this right or wrong, plus can someone help me clarify it a bit?[/i]

G'day.

You'll have to show how you got that.

If you can edit the image with all the side lengths you have determined, that may be helpful.

I think the scale's off.

I believe the 4 squares are above B and W and below C and Z respectfully.

plus I don't see how there are 4 squares with an area of 1.

I assumed the scaling issue was just Paint-awkwardness. As you say, I think we're supposed to assume the lengths are
wtf.gif

The side lengths of the big square are 5 because its area is 25.

Also note the dashed red line is supposed to be equal in length to the blue dashed line (!).

Can you continue?

As Unco asked, HOW did you ever get (3.5)^2 ?
You can tell the base BC = 3, right?
And the height from A to BC is ...... ??

What is the formula for the area of a triangle?

OH, I see. :x
It's \(\displaystyle 1.5^2\)
innit?

NO! 1.5 is half the base; again: WHAT IS THE FORMULA FOR AREA OF TRIANGLE?!
Move your royal siton and find it :)

WTF, you're either joking or ready for employment in Wendy's kitchen

 That name is offensive, and this person has some nerve to pick it.

haha, I hadn't thought of that one, lol. Good one, Denis. (lol, I keep wanting to spell it Dennis...)

WTF? = What's The Formula?
And here I thought it was "What's the frequency [Kenneth]?"

...now let's wait and see who's old enough to know what that refers to....

Eliz.

WTF?= What's teh Formula

So am I stupid or something?! I can't seem to grasp at this problem, it's too subtle. :x

Answer me these question three:

3. What is the answer?
