Percent question

My son is struggling with percents. He asked me how do you solve a problem like what is the number if 12%=8? Used a calculator and got 66.666666666(infinity), not sure how it arrived at that number. Its been a long time since I did these types of equations.

what is the number if 12%=8?

Does this mean something along the lines of "Find the number if twelve percent of that number is 8"? If so, then you have the correct solution, in decimal form.

Without a calculator the question is 12%*x = 8
First change 12% to a decimal by dividing by 100 and dropping the %
.12*x=8
x=8/.12=800/12=200/3=66.666...
