A university theatre sold 478 tickets for a play. The tickets cost $20 per adult and $13 per senior citizen. If the total reciepts were $6970, how many senior-citizen tickets were sold?

I already know the answer as this is just a math final review question, I just want to know how to set this up so I can study it better.

Here are hints:
\(\displaystyle \L\begin{array}{rcl}
A + S & = & ? \\
20A + 13S & = & ? \\
\end{array}\)

Hmmm, So I would say to input 478 for the first term and 6970 for the second term then use elimination to get the value for the S variable.

I do this and get really close to the right answer, but not quite right on. I will show you what I did.

-20(A + S) = (478)-20
20A + 13S =6970

-7S = -2620
--------------
7

S=374.2

Am I doing something wrong?

1--A + S = 478
2--20A + 13 S = 6970
3--From (1), 20A + 20S = 9560
4--Subtracting, 7S = 2590

I imagine you can take it from here.

6970 - 20(478) = -2590, NOT -2620 : just be more CAREFUL :shock:
