This is a general question. How do I calculate an average grade if I have (for example) daily assignments (making up say 10%)of 88, 92, 89, 97 a project of 92 weighing for 20%, and tests of 89 93 and 95 with tests accounting for 45% of the overall grade in the class ( I know it doesnt add up to 100%).

I just threw the numbers out there to make it easier but Im really just looking for a general way to find tht

The usual method is to convert the weights of sub-grades (grades for homework, etc) into points out of one hundred. This converts the weights to points, and the sets of points all add up to 100.

Then take the percentages earned on the sub-grades (90% for homework, etc), and find the number of points earned. Add up the points to find the overall grade, out of 100 points possible.

Hello, valve2021!

How do I calculate an average grade if I have, for example:
. . daily assignments of 88, 92, 89, 97 (accounting for 10%),
. . a project of 92 (accounting for 20%),
. . and tests of 89 93 and 95 (accounting for 45%)

I assume you want your average so far.
. . (Maybe the Final Exam accounts for the final 25% ?)

On your daily assignments, you earned: \(\displaystyle \,88\,+\,92\,+\,89\,+\,97\:=\:358\) points
. . out of the possible \(\displaystyle 400\) points.
You have earned: \(\displaystyle \,\frac{358}{400}\) of the 10%:\(\displaystyle \;\;\Rightarrow\;\;\frac{358}{400}\,\times\,10\%\:=\:8.95%\)

On your project, you earned \(\displaystyle 92\) points out of the possible \(\displaystyle 100\) points.
You have earned: \(\displaystyle \,\frac{92}{100}\) of the 20%:\(\displaystyle \;\;\Rightarrow\;\;\frac{92}{100}\,\times\,20\%\:=\:18.4\%\)

On your tests, you earned: \(\displaystyle \,89\,+\,93\,+\,95\:=\:277\) points out of the possible \(\displaystyle 300.\)
You have earned: \(\displaystyle \,\frac{277}{300}\) of the 45%:\(\displaystyle \;\;\Rightarrow\;\;\frac{277}{300}\,\times 45\%\:=\:41.55\%\)

Hence, you have earned a total of: \(\displaystyle \,8.95\%\,+\,18.4\%\,+\,41.55\%\:=\:68.9\%\)
. . out of a possible 75%.

Therefore, your average (so far) is: \(\displaystyle \:\frac{68.9}{75} \:=\:0.91888... \:\approx\:\L\fbox{92\%}\)

It might be nice if the students were required to show at least some effort, before complete worked solutions were provided.

Just my opinion, of course, and no offense meant.
