i'd just like to know what is meant exactly by 'sketch' when asked in a mathematical context; no point coordinates, etc.?

?
To me, "sketch" means to draw an image on paper that represents the image you have in your mind.

Rough sketches are very useful for getting a handle on a bunch of information related to a given scenario.

Instead of trying to manage all of that information in my head, labeling parts of a diagram help me to buid an even better image in my head.

is it appropriate to mark coordinates of intercepts, turnings points, etc. or is the general shape enough?

If the original question had asked you to calculate those parameters (and asked you to sketch the function) - then it would be "expected" to show those (however, if I were the questioneer, I would have explicitly asked for those).
