The ratio of mary's wage to Joe's is 1 1/2. Joes ears $8.50 per hour. What does mary earn?

First convert 1 1/2 into a single fraction: 3/2.

The phrase "Mary's wage to Joe's" means the ratio M/J, so we know that

M/J = 3/2

Now just replace J with Joe's actual wage as stated in the problem:

M/8.5 = 3/2

That is how you set up the problem. Now just use algebra to get M by itself (solve for M).

But I thought men:women wage ratio was 100:77
