The number of motor
vehicle deaths increased by 13.75 times from 1912 to
2003. There were 39,525 more deaths in 2003 than in
1912. Find the number of motor vehicle deaths in
each of the two years. Note that the number of motor
vehicles on the road increased from 1 million to
230 million between 1912 and 2003.

Name stuff!

T = Deaths in 1912
H = Deaths in 2003

"deaths increased by 13.75 times from 1912 to 2003"

T*13.75 = H -- See how nice this works after writing down clear and concise definitions?

"There were 39,525 more deaths in 2003 than in 1912"

You translate that one and then solve!

Good idea to "see" what's going on is make a SIMPLE simila problem, like:
Year 2000: 10
Year 2005: 70
In 2005, there was 7 times more earthquakes than in 2000.
There was 60 more earthquakes in 2005 than in 2000.
Now play with that; then apply to your problem...capish?
