Hi there,

i am doing easy work (multiplication) but have come across a question i just cant answer. the homework is due for tomorrow. Thanks. this is the question:

A book has 184 pages. The mean number of words per page, is 317. How many words are there in the book?

Average of whatever= (sum of whatever) / (the total number of whatever you have).

So in this case the total number of whatever you have is 184 and the Average is 317. Can you solve from here??

Mean = Average
And as srmichael said,
Average/Mean = (sum of given no.s) / (total no. of given no.s)
= 391 = 'a' / 185
Therefore 'a' = 391 x 185

I've almost given you the answer:p
You can do the multiplication yourself ;)

...except I think you have the numbers wrong and meant to say \(\displaystyle \frac{a}{184}=317\) so \(\displaystyle a=184\times317\)

Hello, Dunoon1!

If you understand the concept of mean (average),
. . you can talk your way through the problem.

A book has 184 pages. .The mean number of words per page is 317.
How many words are there in the book?

The book has an average of 317 words per page.
. . It is as if every page has exactly 317 words.

So how many words are on the 184 pages?
