This? \(\displaystyle \frac{8}{9}=\frac{w-2}{6}\) ?

If so, please explain how to do \(\displaystyle \frac{8}{9}=\frac{z}{6}\) --- Solve for 'z'.

Note: Please show your work, always.

Explain how to do 8 w-2
___ = _____
9 6

Does your problem look like:

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{8}{9} \ = \ \dfrac{w-2}{6}\)

if yes - then multiply both sides by 18 (LCM of the denominators) to get

\(\displaystyle 8 * 2 \ = \ 3 * (w-2)\)

Now continue......

9 6

I think you meant to type (8/9) = (w - 2)/6.

9 times (w - 2) = 8 times 6

9(w - 2) = 48

9w - 18 = 48

9w = 48 + 18

9w = 66

w = 66/9

w = 22/3

Let's see if that is the right answer for w in red.

Go back to the original question, let w = 22/3 and simplify. The goal is to get the same answer on both sides of the equation after simplification. If I accomplish this goal, then we will know that w = 22/3 is right.

Let w = 22/3

(8/9) = (w - 2)/6...original question

(8/9) = [(22/3) - 2]/6.

(8/9) = [(16/3)]/6

(8/9) = 16/18

8/9 = 8/9...It check!!!

We now know for sure the w = 22/3 is correct.
