I have a assignment where I am supposed to insert operating symbols/parenthesis to get a true equation and there are few I couldn't get.

1_ 2_ 3_ 4_ 5 = 3

1_ 2_ 3_ 4_ 5 = 18

1_ 2_ 3_ 4_ 5 = -2

You can use -,+,/,x and parenthesis only where there is a blank.

Thanks for any help, Jim.

Hello, Jimbo13!

You can use -,+,/,x and parenthesis only where there is a blank.

\(\displaystyle 1 - 2 + 3 - 4 + 5 \:=\:3\)

\(\displaystyle (1-2+3) \times (4 + 5) \:=\:18\)

\(\displaystyle 1+(2\times3) - 4 - 5 \:=\:-2\)

Hello, Jimbo13!

\(\displaystyle 1 - 2 + 3 - 4 + 5 \:=\:3\)

\(\displaystyle (1-2+3) \times (4 + 5) \:=\:18\)

\(\displaystyle 1+(2\times3) - 4 - 5 \:=\:-2\)

Or:

\(\displaystyle (1+2+3\times4)/5=3\)

\(\displaystyle (1-2+3)\times(4+5)=18\)

\(\displaystyle (1+2+3+4)/-5=-2\)

Then the solution of the second exercise by soroban shouldn't count,
and his solution of the third exercise has unneeded parentheses.

And none of the solutions of mathwannabe would count.

You can't have any symbols in front of the 1 or after the 5 if you're to adhere
to the rules, else the OP, Jimbo13, needs to amend the rules.

1 x 2 - 3 + 4 - 5 = -2 . . . This one "lucked out," because the
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . product falls at the beginning of the solution.

1 + 2 x (3 - 4 + 5) = 12 . . . Incorrect

Walter, I know that you are not the OP of this thread (unless
you are going by "Jimbo13" and "Walter.") And I don't know if
Jimbo13 posted those alleged solutions in the above quote
box, or you typed them in as Jimbo13, or something else.

The ones marked above as "Incorrect" violate the Order of
Operations.
