We were given a worksheet in class last week. It says to find numbers 1-100 using only 1,5,8 & 9. We were able to find 1-23 but are having trouble after that. We now have 2 weeks to complete the worksheet. If you could please help me & my class with this it would mean a lot.. THANXX

No other restriction!! This should be easy;

24 = 5+5+5+5+1+1+1+1

25 = 5 * 5

26 = 5 * 5 + 1

and so on ......

Hello, sharpiie01!

We were given a worksheet in class last week.
It says to find numbers 1-100 using only 1, 5, 8 & 9.
We were able to find 1-23, but are having trouble after that.
We now have 2 weeks to complete the worksheet.
If you could please help me & my class with this it would mean a lot. THANXX!

I assume we can use \(\displaystyle +,\,-,\,\times,\,\div,\,(\,)\)

Can we use exponents, factorials, square roots, and two-digit numbers like "15" ?

\(\displaystyle (8 * 9) + 5 + 5 - 1 = 72 + 9 =81 \)

\(\displaystyle 9 * 9 = 81\)

\(\displaystyle (5 * 8) + (5 * 8) + 1 = 40 + 40 + 1 = 81\)

\(\displaystyle (5 * 9) + (5 * 9) - 8 - 1 = 45 + 45 - 9 = 81\)

\(\displaystyle (8 * 8) + 9 + 9 - 1 = 64 + 17 = 81\)

There are an infinite number of ways to do each number. Use your imagination.

sharpiie01,

your instructions are not complete. Please type the problem exactly as given
to you.

For example, part of what would be expected in this type of arithmetic puzzle is that
A) all four digits must be used each time, and B) each digit must be used exactly one time
when used to get an expression that equals the desired number.

And, as was mentioned by another user, the allowable operations and/or symbols
must be stated as part of the instructions.

Yes that is correct. You can only use each number once also.

But you can only use each number once....for example: 1+9+8+5=23

And I know this now, but your original question did not explain the problem correctly, did it?

Ask a silly question; get a silly answer.

Read the post entitled Read Before Posting.

It recommends writing the problem out word for word.

I'm sorry about the confusion. The worksheet doesnt give exact directions, the teacher just told us what to do.

Almost done!!

The only numbers I need to get now are 25, 26, 28, 29, 34, 35, 38, 42, 43, 46, 50, 52, 54, 55, 61, 62, 64, 65, 70, 71, 73, 74, 75, 78, 79, 80, 83, 87, 95, 96, & 100......If you know a way to get these numbers only using the numbers 1, 5, 8 & 9 but only using each number once please let me know...Thank you all <3
