We lack the context. What is the topic you have been dealing with? What is the title of the chapter or any headings preceding the question?

Might the question be to define an operation denoted "*" which would transform 4.4 into 40.04?

Check this out. You are doing an arithmetic/basic algebra type of problem.

That asterisk is commonly used to mean "multiplied by."

So, there is an unknown missing after the asterisk.

jennygore19777, can you do long division of decimals?

I see the intended problem as 4.4*? = 40.04

Divide each side by 4.4:

\(\displaystyle \dfrac{4.4*?}{4.4} \ =\ \dfrac{40.04}{4.4} \)==>

\(\displaystyle ? \ = \ \dfrac{400.4}{44} ==>\)

\(\displaystyle ? \ = 9.1 \)

Checking, 4.4*9.1 = 40.04

Do you understand that the problem lookagain solved, "4.4*?= 40.04", was NOT what you initially posted, "4.4*= 40.04", and the said "It is the way I wrote it". lookagain fortunately guessed correctly at what you meant. You could speed up the process of helping you by making sure you have copied the problem exactly.
(Edited due to lookagain's help.)
